Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past couple weeks the fishing was incredible. Since the passing of tropical system Erika the Everglades have been flooded by rains, this pushes all the species we are looking for out of the back bays and puts them out from in in the creeks. I have only been fishing out of the Maverick tunnel boat because the fish are shallow. This month is full of tournaments so every day is a pre fish day to the next tournament.

I was out with my Wife Lourdes today and fished some areas that were loaded with mullet muds , this produces fish! She quietly sits on the platform and don't say anything I was just waiting to here the drag. I heard it and it was a 16 inch Mangrove Snapper any one that fishes the park knows that don't happen allot on the flats. A little later it happened again this time it was a 31 inch Snook, this is all on swim baits. I finally got in on the action with an over slot Redfish, we ended the day looking for Trout to get the boat a slam.

I am in Key Largo for the Backcountry Round-Up tournament, fishing with my good friend Paul and his son P.J. The fishing starts right after the captains meeting on Friday night and ends Sunday at 4 pm

We passed on Friday night and opted to for good dinner and get an early start in the morning, it took a while but we put a nice 29 inch redfish in the boat early. We had some Snook blowing up on our topwaters but no hook ups. I knew where and when I needed to be so we just kept at it. We spent some time netting bait which was the key our good numbers today. The biggest issue right now is the floating Grass outside in Florida Bay it effecting most of my spots. I wanted to be set up on the incoming tide and pitch baits into the trees and it paid off. P.J. started it off with a 28" Snook which hit his bait right next to the boat then another and even let his dad in on the action. The Redfishing was hot with good numbers under the trees we caught 9 and missed a few. We left that spot 10 Reds and 3 Snook and wanted to go work on some Trout. The goal was to catch as many Slams as possible and we were leaving the Snook for Sunday. The winds were out of the west, blowing 20 and the tide was super high with lots of floating grass, we decided to run back to Key Largo. We had 35 miles and a few stops along the way but it just didn't happen. We called it a night around 730 that was 13 1/2 hours of fishing and we were happy with the day.

We were exhausted after cleaning boats, rigging rods, dinner and a few beers I was out. We woke up at five and got an early start before anyone else got on our spots. It paid off we hammered the Snook and couldn't keep the Tarpon off the hook. Once we got to 10 Snook we went Trout fishing, we wanted 10 of each of the species to give us 10 Slams. If you throw in all the Tarpon we would of had a bunch of Grand Slams. P.J. put on a clinic throwing his lures right up at the trees and catch most of the fish he hooked. I fish with a lot of kids and his skill was incredibly, definitely carried the team. We couldn't keep him from catching Tarpon we told him we need Snook, when he saw a Tarpon roll he would catch it.

We went Trout fishing caught a few more but conditions weren't great and by now we had to get back and didn't want to be late. We had 10 Snook, 10 Redfish, 7 Trout for 7 Slams and thought we could be in the money.

Sunday night the awards dinner was at Marker 88 in Islamorada, this place has great food. I was a little surprised but we won most award. We won 2 place team, top male angler, top Jr. angler, most Snook, most Redfish and top Guide. it was a pretty good weekend.

Fishing is good down at Flamingo, the old saying about the glades is" if the bugs are biting so are the fish". This saying has never been more true. if interested give me a call at 305 333 8149
