Late night Tarpon!

Capt. Jim Hobales
March 2, 2010
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am fishing with Jim, Karl and Bill tonight. We started around 3 PM and fished in and around Government Cut. Karl started it off with a nice 22 inch Red Grouper, Jim followed it up with a pretty good sized Mutton Snapper. They traded off catching fish while Bill quietly stayed in the back off the boat holding on to his rod. Bill started squirming and the fish was running and staying deep, at first I thought it was a big Grouper until I saw the line coming to the surface. I said it's a Tarpon and that's when it jumped and we saw the 55 lb fish. Bill fought the Tarpon boat side in about 20 minutes, we got some photos and got back to fishing. It was getting cold and the Tarpon seem to turn off so we called it a night.

I am with Eric and Ryan from California this morning and they are glad to be here, they sat in a Dallas airport for 5 hours trying to get here. we got out around 7 am and it started out slow but eventually we got the rods bent. The Tarpon were everywhere but we were catching Red Groupers, big Mangrove Snappers, Blue Runners, Mackerels, Jacks, Grunts and other fish too, but no Tarpon. We fished hard and they caught 30 or so Groupers at the end of the day, that's all they wanted to bend rods!

I am Tarpon fishing with Jeff Vladka tonight in Government Cut, we Got back to the cut and the Tarpon were there as they have been. The moon was full and the tide was switching which should of turned them on. Jeff caught a bunch of Groupers and Mackerels and had a couple good cut offs in a bait school that's was getting beat up on the beach. Se sat out in front of South Beach until he had to leave around 8 o'clock. the next day I heard the fish turned on @ 9 PM and one boat had 15 hook ups. Just need to be in the right place at the right TIDE on the full moons.

I am fishing with Dan, Bruce and Keith we were supposed to fish south Biscayne Bay but the weather conditions were bad so I suggested Government Cut. It didn't take long and Dan had a Grouper and then another. We caught a lot of Groupers again today while the Tarpon rolled and jumped all around us, there were a bunch of boats out and no one else hooked up at Tarpon either. Its been a late night bite and they aren't playing in the daytime. Once we get off the full moon this week they should go back to a day time feeding pattern. The weather was bad today but we stuck it out and eventually made our way into the bay and caught a lot of Trout. BANANA'S came into play again today, its a superstition I believe in. I proved to the guys today when you get rid off the banana's the fish will bite, they didn't want to throw them away but when they did the fish turn on. I am a believer!
