Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

121912

I am with Sam Rose and his son Mike today fishing Flamingo. I started out looking for some Tarpon but the wind was up and they were hard to see. We were only fishing half day so I didn't have time to waste. I've been fishing with Sam for a long time now but never at Flamingo. I really wanted to show him a great day! It started out slow because of the really high tide, I could see Sam was getting edgy and said he wanted to move, I said give it 30 minutes here. We were fishing shrimp on corks and all of a sudden the corks started going under. Sam caught a Snook, Mike lost a couple of good ones but caught a Snook. Mike had a 20 inch Trout and then hooked into a fish that was pulling drag. The big Redfish came up and shook his head on the surface in typical Redfish style and threw the hook. The tide was getting low and the fish stopped biting.

We went out and found some free jumping Tarpon while Trout fishing. We caught a Pigfish which is a great Tarpon bait so I anchored up and put it out. We caught some big Trout out of some potholes while waiting for the Tarpon to eat the Pigfish. All of a sudden we heard the drag screaming on the bait rod, Mike grabbed it and started reeling we gave chase, the fish was 100 yards into the run. Mike said the fish is gone I told him to keep reeling he's coming back at you. He did and the fish was! A few minutes later the same scenario Mike gave him slack and it was gone.

It was a great fight and it something he will talk about for a long time, Sam said I had enough lets go.

The Tarpon have made an appearance in several places in the Flamingo area, when the water rises above 70 look for them. It possible to see the roll or free jump. Sometime you just have to sit in a known area and wait for them to show themselves.
