Mullet Run

Capt. Jim Hobales
October 6, 2014
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am with the boys from Denmark tonight, Winold , William, Amin and Misha. We are fishing out of Haulover Marine Center in North Miami Beach in the late afternoon. We were looking for Tarpon but Started out catching about 30 Jacks as a warm up. Amin and William have never fished before. I netted some Pilchards and started live chumming hoping to bring up some good fish and keep them busy. I was on my way out of the inlet when I ran into surface activity there were birds ,Pilchards and fish busting them. We stopped and the frenzy of Ladyfish, Jacks and Snapper kept the rod bent for 30 minutes until I said we need to go to the bridge for bigger and different species. There was definitely a feeding frenzy here as well with big Jacks, Snook and Tarpon blowing baits out of the water. I tossed out pilchards around the boat to bring them close and it worked we had several hits and a Amin caught a big Jack and Jumped a 40 Lb. Tarpon. It was crazy we fished it until they quit biting and called it a night.

I am fishing with my good friend Karl today along with his Susan at Flamingo, I told Karl I just boat a Maverick HPX Tunnel boat and he said he wanted to fish on it! It's been a while since I fished a smaller boat but I went right back to my old spots that are less than a foot of water. It didn't take long and we were on a bunch of Tarpon that were feeding up under the Mangroves, the popping sound was keeping amused. I set up and Karl and Susan cast at the rolling fish, next thing we know Karl was hooked up to a decent Snook. The fish came off but shortly later he had another bigger Snook which came off! I just did this losing fish thing last weekend we need to catch one here! We kept working, Karl was hooked up again this time it was a small 10 lb. Tarpon which jumped and fought like he was much bigger. They caught Snappers, Cuda's and Jack's and then it was Susan's turn. Susan hooked up to a Tarpon and it was running jumping and there was a lot of yelling by Karl trying to film with go pro. We landed the fish her first Tarpon and took some photo's, then revived and released it. The wind was really starting to blow out of the west @ 20 plus so I tried to get out of it. We bounced jigs off the bottom of a point where the water was moving across it. It didn't take long and we got into a good Snook bite, Susan was first then Karl we went back and forth for a while. The weather was making it tough so we called it a day, plus they were beat.

Its October and it's time to fish the Mullet run, they have been sitting just north of us but as of this writing they should be pushing down the coast off of Miami Beach. If you have never fished the Mullet run you owe it to yourself. If it's rough you can fish from shore, bridge or pier or if prefer to fish by boat you can call me 305 333 8149 and Ill be glad to take you. It the time of year where everything come together and we can have some great days.
