Mullet run still strong for Tarpon!

Capt. Jim Hobales
November 10, 2010
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The first front of the year was a strong one, dipping our temps into the 50's. The conditions will improve in the next few days and hopefully get back on the Mullet school action. This front should push more bait and schools of Tarpon, Snook, Jacks, Mackeral, Bluefish and Sharks down the coast.

I am fishing the Mullet run with Bernie Thompson in N. Biscayne Bay today, it has been raining for 2 days now and there's lots of fresh water pushing out. At first we couldn't see to good so we dropped a couple baits while waiting under the Haulover bridge. Bernie hooked something that was pulling drag so I backed him a way from the bridge but he fish stayed deep. He kept pressure on it and eventually landed a 3 lb Red Grouper, not bad for a first bite. It was dark and rain squalls were steady but we made a run for it. As we idled to the first spot we saw a Tarpon blow bait out of the water and then there were some other bust as well. We cast Twitch n Raps and immediately hooked up with 5 lbs Jack Crevalles, I didn't have bait yet and the Tarpon seem keyed in on the Mullet. One toss of the net gave us more bait than we could use but the Tarpon weren't eating them. The Jacks and Ladyfish kept us busy but no Tarpon, I said lets go! I pulled up to a dock and told Bernie where the bait had to be. He made the prefect cast and got rewarded with a big Snook bite only to get wrapped up on a piling. We moved on and caught a dozen Trout up to 2 lbs and several Barracudas. The weather wasn't getting any better so we called it a day.

I am with Paul this morning and we have our first big cold front of the season moving thru. I ran to the area I having been finding my Tarpon, we got a big surprise of Tarpon busting the Mullet schools. This area was 300 yards long and just as wide and full of Tarpon. The Mullet were as thick as I have seen them this fall, Paul threw a top water for a while and then a Twitch n Rap but again they were focused on Mullet.

We netted some and put them out, as the front was passing thru. It was a great show and then the N.W. wind picked up over 25 mph and they shut down. We stuck it out but they disappeared on us. We worked hard a caught some Jacks, Ladyfish and Trout. I ran to Dumbfounding Bay mostly because its protected, I chummed with pilchards and had some Jacks show up behind us but the front killed any reel action. We ended the morning with a giant school of Jacks and Cudas chasing all our pilchards.
