Mullet run,hot and cold!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have spent a couple days lately trying to get my son a Tarpon, today we were on them pretty good in the mullet schools. We rigged with a live mullet and tossed them into and around the mullet schools,we had a couple bites and jump offs . The Tarpon and Snook were blasting the mullet schools for couple hours and it was a lot of fun, it would of been more fun if we stayed hooked up. The last bite was a Spinner Shark which jumped right in the middle of all the swimmers. The mullet disappeared and the bite was over so we went home.

We went out again today just for a couple hours looking for the mullet schools but they weren't around. I netted some mullet in the bay and went looking for Tarpon ,my son James was casting a Twitch n Rap and yelled he had one. He was hooked up to a 25 lb. Tarpon that was jumping and trying to get away, after a short battle we landed the fish and he got his picture with one.

This is something we as guides explain to our clients that we cant always get them on the first try, when we do it like hitting the lottery. It took my son 5 trips and a handful of lost fish. We also had a few big Snook hit our mullet but we didn't land any of them. The big jacks were mixed in also and we did catch a bunch of them.

I am with Hal, Becky and Seth today fishing out of Key Biscayne. I ran down to Stiltsville and netted some Pilchards and put them to work, I started to chum with them and brought up and assortment of fish. We caught Mutton Snappers to 5 lbs., Gag Groupers to 22 inches, Mangrove Snappers, a Sting Ray, Almaco Jack and a bunch of Barracudas. We had a couple big bites which we couldn't stop only to come unhooked. We were only out for a half day and they were pretty much satisfied with the numbers of fish and species caught, Seth is just a young kid and never experienced anything like this before he really was excited.
