Day or night fish are biting!

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing was good this past week, windy conditions made it tough a couple days but running to the right areas made it fishable.

I was sitting around this morning enjoying a day off the water when my phone rang. It was Jack Harris and he had just got into town the night before and was bored already and wanted to go fishing. We were scheduled for Friday and I said I would meet him and Jake around 3 P.M.. We met up and started off Trout fishing around the pilings on 36 St.I had them throwing the new Rapala lure I have been using and it was on. Jack had a big Trout pulling drag, it came off but this bite lasted over an hour. I asked if they wanted to try another area to look for Tarpon . We ran to Key Biscayne and it seem like it the winds picked up. The tide was getting ready to change and I wanted to be in Government cut when it did. We ran to the Cut and on our first drift Jake was hooked up to a 80 lb. crazed jumping Tarpon. The fish came off after about 10 minutes and back for another drift This time Jack's rod got slammed but the Tarpon crushed the crab and didn't get hooked up. We set up again and it took a while but the third time was a charm! This was a good Tarpon @ 110 lbs. after a couple good jumps the fish stayed down for over an hour dragging us in and out of the cut. We got the fish up next to the boat a dozen times for a release and eventually came off. It was late and we called it a night. Ill see them again on Friday.

I am with Jack and Jake again today down at Flamingo, It was breezy so decided to launch in the back country. We hit a couple spots and the headed to the coast, but first I netted some baits. I hit some creeks mouths on the falling tide looking to chum up some Snook. The live chum worked quick and we had fish slurping our baits of the surface but it was only Trout. We had some Tarpon rolling around us but no interest in our baits or lures. I decided to run north and look for some fish up there it wasn't easy but we managed about 10 Snook up to 30 inches by the days end.

I am at Flamingo with Albert and Nitter today, I launched out in Fl. Bay in search for Tarpon. The wind is blowing and a lot of my Tarpon pots are muddy. I ran out west caught some Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish then went looking for Tarpon. We spotted some free jumpers out in the Gulf of Mexico and set up a drift, I put out some baits and had a couple little Sharks eat them. We continued to drift and hooked a nice 50 lb. Tarpon that was jumping wildly. It took about 20 minutes and Nipper had his first Tarpon. It was really windy and bite stopped so we ran out and looked for Tripletails. We caught a couple and headed in because it was rough.
