Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

020509

I am with John Roberts and his friend Marino today. we got on the water abot 1 pm in search for Tarpon and any other fish that would eat. It is cold and windy so we stayed inside the cut jigging with live shrimp. We caught 2 types of Snappers 3 types of Groupers, Jacks, porgies and Grunts but no Tarpon, Snook or Permit. We called it at 530pm and the Tarpon turned on right after that.

I am fishing with Jim Drummond and his son Eric today at Flamingo. It is cool and cloudy, these days have been kind of tough early on and then it warms up and the fish seem to bite. Today was no different once the sun started to pop out we started to catch Redfish. We moved around and we would catch a 1 fish on every spot, so I kept jumping around. Jim caught an oversized Redfish for his first fish and then backed it up with a smaller one. They ended up with 8 Redfish, Trout, Blackdrum, Trout, Sheephead and Jacks

I am part of a 7 boat trip today down at Flamingo, Capt Dave Sutton puts this trip together every year and we have a really good time fishing with these guys which are from Pittsburgh and Maryland. They were all wearing either Ravens or Steelers colors and were matched with each other for fun. Today I have Mike and Joe we Started out quickly with a Trout bite after about 20 or so we moved on looking for other species. I made my way west hitting some creeks and then Lake Ingraham. I anchored on an eddy where there current was smokin and it didn't take long for the fish to to eat. Joe made the cast of his life and was rewarded with a really nice Redfish, then Mike followed we did this for the last 45 minutes of the tide. Every cast was either Redfish, Blackdrum and a really big Trout, these fish were holding on some rocky bottom. Mike ended up with a 9 lb Black Drum which pulled some drag and Joe continued to get excited about catching Redfish These guys were having some serious fun, the tide went slack and the bite slowed so we headed to the ramp

We are with the same group today, I am with Jimmy who sets up the trip and Ray. I have fished jimmy for the last 3 years and its always interesting, this year is no different. We got to our fist spot and got into some Blackdrum real quick and were looking for some Snook too! we decide to leave and thats when it got interesting as I turned the key nothing happened, then there was smoke. It smelled like wires were burning and they were. To make a long story shorter I finally used the trolling motor batter to get the boat started and it worked fine although it was draining the battery. I got back in to an area where I knew I would be able to make it back at the end of the day. It really worked out for us, we got into a really good Snook bite with 3 over 30 inches and a bunch of smaller ones. They also caught Jacks to 5lbs,Trout and Ladyfish. We tried some Shark fishing but we had no Shark bites. We had some Pompano skipping behind the boat which always gets me excited because of their table fair. The last hour or so was incredble the sun came out, it warmed up, the tide started to come in and the Snook were hot Jimmy and Ray left with big smiles.
