South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

072207

Today, I fished with Dan, Roger and Pat at Flamingo. We started out on some Tarpon but they would not bite this morning. There were some serious squalls coming across Cape Sable today, which changed where I was headed for Tarpon. Dan was interested in fishing but also interested in riding the Pathfinder 22. It was one of those day yiou fish where there’s no lightning. I stopped at an area I had found some Tarpon a week earlier but there’s also by catch of Sharks, Trout, Ladyfish and Jacks. The Trout were stacked up and we had a couple big ones over 23 inches. The Sharks found us and we caught a couple of the small Spinners and Black tips. I ran to the edge of the gulf looking for Triple tails and Tarpon but only caught more Trout and some big Mangrove Snappers. It was a short day and we made our way back in all in all it was a successful day considering the weather.

I’m with Pablo and Pedro this morning, man that got confusing a couple times. The Tarpon were popping small baits and free jumping out of the water after them, this only lasted for about 30 minutes. On Pablo’s first cast he caught a Trout and then on his second a small Snook. The mullet were getting beat up every time they went over a pothole. The guys had several big hits and short runs before the fish came off. Pedro had a fish slam his Twitch n Rap and pull plenty of line and do some head shakes we had been catching a couple decent Trout so I thought it was another 3 lb fish! The fish continued to fight and finally when it got next to the boat we saw it was a 5 lb Bluefish. The Bluefish fought as hard as Snook the same size so it was fun. We had some shots at a couple more Tarpon but they seem to be moving with a cause and that means they are not eating. I decided to move to an area that had some tarpon in a little deeper water with plenty of current, the up side of the spot is there are plenty of other species there. As we set up our drift thru the area I kept looking for Tarpon rolling on the slick surface, meanwhile Pablo and Pedro are catching fish after fish not really complaining about no Tarpon. They caught plenty of Mangrove Snappers up to 14 inches, Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish; but there were no Tarpon here today. It was time to move again! I had a live mullet in the well that Pablo had snagged so I went to a trough were I use Mullet to catch Tarpon. It didn’t take long to find them they were stacked up pretty good in here. Pablo was hooked up and I heard the fish jump, we finally had Tarpon hooked up. It fought for a little bit and then did what Tarpon do it threw the lure. On Pablo’s next cast he hooked up again this time it was a Snook after landing it the bite turned off. We were only fish a half day but we really stayed busy during that time these guys were beat. The amazing thing is they caught 8 species all on a Twtich n Rap.
