South Florida Report - Flamingo, Biscayne Bay & Miami

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

082408

Today I fished Whitewater Bay with Capt. Bruce Carlton, I like to fish with him to scout out areas plus we are good friends. We started out in Buttonwood Canal catching small Snook and jumped a bunch of Tarpon. We hit 3 other areas in Coot Bay and hooked 15 more Tarpon catching few. Once we got up into Whitewater Bay the water was really tannic from all the freshwater. I caught a 22” Redfish real quick and then a 12 lb. Snook but that was it, time to move on. I was really looking for Goliath Groupers today, normally August and Sept. is a good month for them in the backcountry. It didn’t take long before Bruce had a 28 inch Snook and then I had had a 10 lb. Goliath and some 12 – 14 inch Mangrove Snappers. We were fishing a couple different lures but the one that caught 99 percent was the Gulp Shrimp. We were fishing a little deeper than normal; 2-3 foot shore lines with heavy cover. The bite was good we ended up with 60 or 70 Mangroves from 10-16 inches, which was in between catching 25 Snook and 12 Goliaths. I will be offering this trip the next few months. This is a lot of fun but take some serious casting.

I am fishing with Keith and Sally from Ohio today, I was going to try the backcountry again today but we had some really bad weather hanging around. I decided to stay close in Florida Bay. This was one of those days I was actually looking for the bananas in the boat. Right of the bat, I fell in! This is nothing new but shortly after Keith fell in. I asked Sally if she had any bananas and she said no! There were fishing busting up all around us and some mullet pushing thru, the Twitch n Rap wasn’t getting hit so I was wonder what’s up. I got my cast net out and caught 25 perfect finger mullet. I rigged a heavy rod a put the big mullet out, it only took about five minutes and Sally was hooked up to a big Tarpon who was “heading for the hills”. The Tarpon ran for 100 yards and the dropped bait good thing we got more. Keith was next but this time we had a big Bull Shark; after 25 minute a soaked Keith got the 150 lb Bull Shark next to the boat where we took some photos and let it go. We had a little more activity so we went back to the Twitch n Rap and Keith finally got into a big Snook, the fish fought really hard and was finally brought along the side where I netted it and took some photos. The rain was coming down and after one more Redfish we called it a day.
