Flamingo & Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Canes

Hurricane Dennis has definitely left it's mark on South Florida. Although we were hardly in it's path, trees were uprooted, islands have new contours, markers are missing and the water has the clarity of chocolate milk.

Unfortunately, this marks the beginning of our Summer pattern... beautiful weekends interrupted by large storms or even hurricanes. Tropical Depression Emily, soon to be the second hurricane of the season, is headed in our general direction already.

The good news is, the fishing just prior to a large storm is usually unbelievable...

The 'Storm' before the Storm

Here's a report from last Thursday's fishing adventure... the day before we started feeling Dennis' effects here in So. Florida.

Thursday, July 7, I fished with new clients Juan & Herman. The trip was a gift for Herman's Birthday and Juan's belated Father's Day... what a gift. I know I've posted some unreal reports this year, but this one takes the cake... I've officially been humbled.

Snook, Tarpon & Redfish galore. I left our early morning Whitewater Bay spot at about 0840 with 20 Snook, 2 Redfish & a couple jumped Tarpon, all on EXUDE soft plastics!

We hit another spot in WW Bay for trout and landed a dozen in about 30 minutes... BACK COUNTRY SLAMS by 0930 hours! Then we ran about a mile for bait, loaded up on nice sized pilchards and ran North to a few undisclosed locations that have been holding larger Snook. On the second cast, Herman hooked up with a 5 lb. Tripletail... this should have been an indication of the type of day we would have. We landed a few more large Snook and decided to head South to the Cape.

Having landed several Snook & Trout, Juan & Herman were in seek of the elusive LARGE Redfish. At our first stop at the Cape, on the second cast we landed a 6 lber... and a few minutes later a 6 lb Snook. After a few more smaller Reds & Snook I decided to head back through WW Bay as we had a SE wind at near 20 knots... so we ran back through Joe's River to our Snook/Tarpon hole from the morning.

The bite was even better in the afternoon... we landed another 30 Snook (a very conservative estimate), jumped another Tarpon or two and hooked a large Goliath that decided one of our small Snook looked good enough to eat.

FLW Pro Redfish Series

Capt. Jerry DiPasquale and I will be in Charlotte Harbor/Pine Island next week for the FLW Professional Redfish tour. We're excited to represent So. Florida at this, the only So. Florida event on the FLW Tour. Everyone's welcome to come see us... the festivities are being held at:

Stump Pass Marina

260 Maryland Ave.

Englewood FL 34224

Phone: (941) 697-4300

Friday 7/22 & Saturday 7/23

Weigh in begins around 3:30 pm

We simply couldn't fish events like the FLW tour events without a little help. We would like to send out a special thanks to our sponsors, clients and friends!

Catch 'em up...

Capt. Benny
