Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flamingo: Like a Box of Chocolates Because You Never Know What You're Going to Get.
Fishing during the last stretch of May was a bit cumbersome due to varied weather. Many boaters had to dodge some serious storms but those who have been prepared reaped great results in the net. I was out during Memorial Day and must admit that the weather was terrible but managed a couple of nice trout and a red. A friend of mine fished the day after and caught five tripletail and a trout.
June fishing at Flamingo in Everglades National Park is a favorite month for many seasoned and novice anglers since it puts fishing a stones throw away. The snook that have ventured deep into the backwaters are now scattered all over the flats and will make them susceptible to a well-presented spoon, fly, or jig. Many visitors are now gone and a new cadre of serious flats hunters swarm these bountiful shallows in search of catching a slam.
Mark and Sam Engel joined me to start June off by letting some fish pull some drag "out front." This father and son duo managed to catch and release about two dozen seatrout, jumbo ladyfish, jacks, and snapper. Two redfish were spotted on the flats but they did the disappearing trick. Mark hooked a large snook (in surprisingly skinny water) to within five feet of the boat until the fishing line caught itself around the reel. Unfortunately, the snook became the crook when the monofilament gave in to the sudden run of this fish. At least we got to see what it was.
Unusual catches included a three and a half foot nurse shark that was unexpectedly tail-hooked and a six-inch trout. The best part of the day was the whole day because Sam was a genuine and humorous fellow and kept cracking jokes. Mark made a great choice in taking his dad fishing for his birthday. Happy birthday Sam, the man!
Who knows what else June may put on our plate? Seek and you shall find!
Capt. Ariel
