Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Patience for Permit

This time we had it all to ourselves. Whatever lay beneath or in the vicinity certainly has been keeping the permit well interested. If not tens, then hundreds of them. Circling and moving about actively and moving in well-grouped schools out in the Gulf. It was late in the day, in fact, it was about 6 p.m. and I was hooked up with a live one that was testing my skills and stamina.

At the end of the day one 15 pound permit was landed and each of the two anglers fishing with me hooked up with one a piece. We learned that being by patient and persistent we were able to get the hook-ups we needed. Live crabs are the top choice. I tried a Chernobyl crab dropping it right in front of the fish and got a refusal. Next time I won’t forget the Merkins. Pink jigs will work as will shrimp and plastic crab imitations. The last tip is don’t go as far as I did without another boat because if there’s a breakdown you will spend a night.

Tripletail have been sighted. I saw five in total; a trio and two loners during the most recent day out. As far as cobia goes there are some out there. I tagged and released a 22” fish. If you find it call the number on the tag and give them data.

Bonefish have been tailing aggressively in Biscayne Bay although the school of bones encountered last spooked. A second trip by foot put me on a skunk but I don’t expect to strike out. But before chasing bones again we’ll be hunting snook and reds on the flats for the next two days back at Flamingo.
