Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

TARPON TIME

Fishing has been pretty good for the most part but it should get even better with this warm up. It is starting to feel like July in March. There is much to choose from. BIG TARPON, snook, redfish, trout, drum. I even saw a couple of big cobia being brought in. Spring bass action is also on the heat up.

A half-day trip with Jeremy and Theresa Yong produced a redfish, a three pound trout, and a jewfish. This jewfish was sighted tailing adjacent to mangroves and took a bait that was gently dropped on its head. Its weight was guest mated between 12-15 pounds. Tarpon rolled all around us but refused to bite.

Veteran anglers Fabian Beltran and partner Eddy joined me for some improved action with a bunch of trout, drum, and snook. This was Fabian’s first snook and both anglers first Everglades experience. Eddy got spooled by some large fish as I was unable to catch up in time without throwing one of these guys over with engine thrust. I think I will take their invitation to Key West this June for nighttime reef fishing.

You guys won’t believe the names of the following charter parties but I am honestly speaking the truth. Howard Stern (Kansas City, MO) and Eddy D. managed a decent day in 25 knot winds. They caught flounder, lane snapper, and 6 trout. A lady right next to us landed a nice baby tarpon. These people were the nicest gentlemen I have met in a long time. We are planning a permit wreck trip in three months.

Finally a father and some team cashed in on some time in the great outdoors. The pleasure was all mine when Alan and Mathew Fish (yes, that’s their real last name)joined me for some mixed action. Each caught a drum averaging 3 and four pounds respectively. Dad hooked up to a monster fish that took him straight to the roots and busted off. This had to be a snook. Mathew did a great job of driving the boat back to the marina.

I am expecting a good tarpon season and am booking into April, May, and June. Give me a call and we’ll set up a memorable trip. GUARANTEED!
