Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

SUPER SPRING FISHING

There have been some great catches aboard but I must say we have perservered through the worst weather and made the best of it. It begins with the Leyva’s, a father and son team from Boca Raton, Fl. that caught five snook and eight redfish. These folks learned to “snook ‘em’ following five break-offs and kept a pair of 28” fish for dinner. That has been my best snook day thus far-this season.

My next trip was to a freshwater saw grass marsh in the Everglades for the purposes of filming an infomercial for “Zip.” These quick lures were fast to catch about 15 largemouth’s in just two hours along with a bunch of other specimens including gar and large bowfin. I’ll keep my readers informed to when and where this televised commercial will run. Special thanks to Florida Light Tackle Charters, Inc. for making this happen successfully.

Dr. Bob Shebert picked another great day to fish and was the first to get his trophy Glades permit weighing in a 25 pounds. Later he caught another that pushed eleven. We also unexpectedly ran into mackerel and caught at least 15 before getting a cobia break-off. Finally, Dr. Bob caught, tagged, and released a good-sized cobia. A 100 pound nurse shark was also sent back as were giant jacks, snapper. As always there is one big fish that gets away, and it seems that these are the things in fishing that keep us coming back for more. That one had to be a giant tarpon, but, of course, we’ll never know.

That giant tarpon came back alright- to pick a tough fight with Andre Z. , a Miami lawyer, that battled this beast for a good 25 minutes. Tom, Jim, and I watched, applauded, and prayed that this silver king would come to the boat. Andre subdued it and it was four feet long and my 30# boga was too small a tool to handle this big fish. The guys also caught a flounder and a barracuda got the best of a trout, leaving the head behind.

This last story is the beginning of a new way to fish for Edward Quinones and Dr. Rick Ramirez, of Orlando. They told me that next time we are going to trade fishing equipment. They are going to use a cast net and I, a fishing rod. Even though I was doing my job as a captain, in this instance catching bait I came along a welcomed surprise. On the last throw of my cast net and ELEVEN pound GOLIATH GROUPER decided to join the menhaden and silver-sides. These guys weren’t too angry at me because the took a pair a fillets back with them from a 28” snook Edward had caught with a spinning rod. We took some great photos of the fish with a telephoto lens.

Don’t forget to read my latest article in SHALLOW WATEWR ANGLER magazine, Florida Sportsman’s companion this spring titled - ELEMENTARY BOAT BUILDING.

Catch you later,

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
