Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
January 14, 2004
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

New Year Means New Arrivals: Mackerel and Tarpon

The day just before the fronts arrive seem to be the calmest but not necessarily the most productive ones. We have been fishing inside waters on those tough, windblown days with productivity. Trout and snook are a sure thing in Whitewater bay this time of year. Also lots of jacks are biting the plugs we are throwing. The tarpon have showed up on a few days but not consistent. Then again how predictable is tarpon fishing?

The boaters with the big boats are scoring on mackerel offshore and some of the wrecks are also producing a few cobia and even grouper. I have been doing my grouper fishing in the deep backcountry rivers with good results. Word is out that some large tripletail are also lingering way offshore but I haven’t had any luck with those.

A few highlights in angling accomplishment: Jay Waller and son joined me to catch drum, Goliath, and sheepshead. Dr. Mike Fleming would bring his son from Hawaii and son-in-law for some freshwater action. This day pruduced a 5 and 4 pound largemouth and a 4 pound peacock along with another 10 bass. Dr. Fleming was nice enough to take me to one of "his" pet spots. Then Brian Feinberg and partner Ray would wake me out of my tent to have a banner day of fishing. We caught tailing drum, sheepshead, Goliath, gag, trout, and more. Later I got some rest back in my tent, of course, for just one more night. And the next day spent some time with the family-on the water.

Hot Fishing Tip:

When super low tides are present and very little current, head to the inside waters.
