Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Florida Bay and Whitewater Bay
March to the hot fishing bite in the backwaters of the ‘Glades this spring. Fish are going to be hungry due to their pre and post spawn behavior and increased water temperatures. Although the beginning of March in south Florida is usually associated with some high winds it’s never a problem in the secluded coves and inland bays. Open bays such as Oyster and Ponce de Leon should have a reliable trout bite. If it is calm look for tarpon and increase the size of the lures. Don’t be afraid to throw 6 inch plugs!
Snook fishing should continue improving all along coasts, on the flats, and in the creeks. Remember to spool up with fresh line because the biggest fish of the year commonly get “hooked” during the spring. A fifteen to twenty pound snook or a seventy pound tarpon is a likely possibility. I would suggest braided line like Power Pro or Yozuri Hybrid. Even trout can be as heavy as five or six pounds with most fish averaging around two.
Redfish will gather on the bights and shallow flats. Don’t forget about Biscayne Bay because bonefish will be very active this month. If you prefer to get away from the city try bonefishing in Florida Bay where there are few crowds. The real excitement will come from tarpon this spring. In the Everglades there are always some around - the trick to these prehistoric fish is keeping the hook attached. Whether using chemically or physically sharpened hooks, make sure they are large enough and tough enough to prevent them opening during the fight. Get out and go fishing this spring it’s the best time for a slam!
Dr. Michael Fleming and Walter C. caught some four keeper sheepshead on our trip and drum. With new power and a Garmin sounder we have been right on top of the fish. All full days offer NO FISH NO PAY!!!!!Call to book.
