Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hot, Hot, Hot Fishing

Fishing is hot! Snook and tarpon are finally on fire in the Everglades region. With increasing water temperatures they have been taking lures exceptionally well. Look for tarpon in some of the trout grass beds and channels. For snook stick to structure, whether it’s an island or the mainland. Goliath grouper action has also been brick solid.

Rains have been a factor in determining the fishing spots because they may not allow you to go where you want to. We have had to do a little dodging but things have worked out nicely. I think the rain forces much water out of the glades and helps with the cool down overall.

Offshore waters in the Gulf have proved great fishing. The Solis party of four aboard our 21’ deep vee took pompano, jacks, trout, with shots at large cobia. Jigs and plastic grubs did the damage. Longtime client Nicole Dennison and I made a south Biscayne bay excursion during a late afternoon to find plenty of snapper including a nice hogfish. Miguel Aspuru and brother had a unforgettable or unbelievable day at Flamingo with oversized redfish and snook. Two fish broke the hooks! We also landed smaller reds, a 16” snapper, released a tripletail, trout, goliath, and even 5 mackerel. It was awesome. They planned a half-day trip and it turned out to be a full day with the action never ceasing. I also has a great trip with Austin Forsyth with a flounder, 21 pound goliath, trout, and two snook that took jigs. One of which was oversized! Kelly Hogan and I made a daring venture to north Biscayne Bay and managed a six foot cuda and “endless” snapper. Donovan Wells is another happy customer. He caught around twenty trout on DOA shrimp near Sandy Key in Florida Bay. Then he found himself surrounded by tarpon and popping snook near a mangrove shoreline. Two chances is what we had this time, unfortunately none landed. Glenn and son fished south Bay for anything and caught a five pound cuda and his son, a four pound bar jack. No bones. Although I finally had the chance to take my wife and and she landed a four and a half pound bonefish. We saw over 30 altogether, a permit, and a tarpon. She was happy with her catch and I was glad to see that!

Pick your days carefully and be prepared to return around lunch. Take a siesta and head back out into the evening for hot fishing!

I want to thank all of my sponsors, clients, readers, colleagues, my family, and most importantly God for allowing me a great fishing season.
