Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late Summer and Fall at Flamingo

I’m finally back for those of you who read my reports regularly. The past six weeks or so was spent in Stuart, Fl. At Chapman School for training as a yacht surveyor. My business is expanding and along with the charters I will be conducting marine surveys for insurance companies.

Now for the fishing report. The two days spent since I’ve returned home were very productive - contrary what I was told at a local tackle shop. In Florida Bay we landed around 35 seatrout, 20 ladyfish, and a dozen jacks between Murray Key and Sandy Key. Large schools of bait were located and mangrove snapper also joined in for the fun catching. This very same day John Myers took a six pound snook. We also witnessed another boat land a beautiful snook only to be released into the jaws of a mean shark.

The key to finding action is to find some sort of moving water during these windless days. I have been sighting lots of large snook on the shallows and undercuts. Use the long 8’ rods to approach your quarry. This same tackle is used in tricking the sly tripletail, which by the way is prime time for.

I have refused to fish the Bights lately, though some schools of resident fish are prowling. The more boats on top of them, the more difficult the y will be to catch. Another hot tip is fishing Whitewater Bay. The rains have created some cool flushings and triggered a snook bite. The real good news is that few people are going there this time of year. It has been a well kept secret.

If tarpon are your interest, rest assured and arrive one hour before the sun rises because there are plenty of juveniles. We had many around the boat rolling but did not get a strike after 7:30 am.
