Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
September 9, 2005
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Return to Flamingo Soon

Return to Flamingo Soon

Flamingo is expected to re-open Sunday, Sept. 11 @ 5 am. Call (305)242-7700 for questions. Hurricane Katrina’s eye passed through north Whitewater Bay causing extensive damage to vehicles, trailer housing, houseboats, and numerous skiffs. Caution should be taken as Katrina has made deposits and also eroded some beach areas. Expect lots of freshwater until tides change a few dozen times.

Reports from some Keys’ guides have been good for snook and redfish, those making the enduring run. Fishing should remain good since the Park has been closed for so long. And I don’t really expect that many people overcrowding Flamingo just yet. No one was able to go opening day for snook, I think the excitement has leveled out.

Like many other guides, I am expecting a comeback in business charters. At least we are alive to fish another day. God bless those people in New Orleans.

Another option in Florida Bay is to launch from Key Largo and fish those backwaters. Large redfish and tarpon can be found this time of year there. I like the area outside Duck Key, Trout Cove, and around Eagle Key. Lures like gold spoons and bucktails work best. Where do you put in? Rowell’s, Gilbert’s, Blackwater Sounds, or the dirt ramp at the county line are a start.

Give a guide a call and arrange a much needed fishing adventure. Don’t forget to take your dad or mom fishing.
