Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
November 23, 2005
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flamingo About to Re-open

By the time you read this ramps at Flamingo should have opened. Please call 305-242-7700 for the latest information. Many folks are eagerly awaiting to get back into the park. The way many of the guides including myself have been doing this has been from the Keys. It takes about 45 minutes from Islamorada and a good hour from Largo.

The bite is slowly improving. I think many of the fish suffered from “shock” and the just getting used to new logs and trees that are now home.

Wilma’s direct impact to favorite fishing grounds in the coastal Everglades has put fishing on hold. As of this writing there have been few fishermen travelling to the backcountry due to the park’s closure and long distance from the Keys. Things are looking astonishingly different but I think the long-term effects of storms will be beneficial to the overall health of the ecosystem just as fires are to forests.

The usual run of bottom feeders like drum and sheepshead is still expected to take place this month but the real action will be just offshore with pelagics. Spanish mackerel will make a strong showing along with cobia. For those staying close to shore keep in mind snook season closes mid December and trout will re-open in January.

Whitewater Bay should have a fair amount of mullet and near the rivers pilchards can be caught with sabiki rigs or castnets. Try tipping bucktail jigs with shrimp and slow bouncing them off the points and drop-offs. Keep a lookout for tarpon in this area. Water color has been a little murky even in places like Biscayne Bay and Key Largo because of the storms but sediment should begin to settle and get back to normal. I have been fishing these areas a lot more since Flamingo closed and have been enjoying the short commute from my home. Many are eagerly waiting to get back into the backcountry we all love so much. By the time you read this, chances are we’re already fishing Flamingo again! Be prepared to be self-sufficient with certain supplies like gas and navigational aids. Remember Wilma has taken many stakes, buoys, and day boards. Feel free to call me for an update.
