Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
FLAMINGO RAMP OPEN!!!!!
I have been informed by Park Superintendent Kimball that Everglades Park will reopen one outside ramp on Saturday Feb 4th. Note that only one ramp is expected to be open so it could take more time than is normal to launch.
Fishing in Whitewater has required a bit more “hunting” in the backcountry. A lot more fish have seen quite a few more boats and require a stealthier approach. Expect to see more trout in this area, that is one species that is readily willing to bite. Snook season has just reopened and good old linesides is always worth casting to. For trout try the Joe River area, we have taken some large dish recently and the travel north of marker 26 for numbers. Use the ladyfish for the goliath in the Shark Rivers.
Flamingo in Florida Bay has been excellent for everything that swims. I have been making the run from Key Largo. Try the Carribean Club ramp and cut through the Boggies. Be careful when you near the Dump Keys as there two large trees deposited there. Larger boats beware the Black Betsys and Dragover because of the extreme shallow water.
Some of the adventurous anglers that have fished with me recently : Jesse Langner in Whitewater with a slam, Perry Braun and son, the Cotaya Party which included a two-day tandem trip with Capt. Haines, Manny Derrazaga, Richard and son Lorenzo of Brasil, Carl Conner the fly guy, and one last trip with a large charter group in Biscayne Bay.
I have also been fishing the no motor zones including parts of Hell’s Bay, West Lake, Mud Lake, and Bear Lake in my Ghenoe. Snook has been the target and yes they are biting. Call for details.
The following is from the Everglades Nat’l Park meeting: It is our intention to create a group of interested parties that will meet with Park people to discuss proposed changes and this does appear to be a viable goal. The Park Superintendent did tell us that opening the ramp is their #1 priority. Everglades Park is #5 in priority for ten National Parks. The top 4 are all in the Gulf region that was hit by Katrina and Wilma. They expect the campground to be open on Sunday Feb. 5th. At present he is hoping for a mid-June reopening of the ramp. They need a depth of 6 feet in the basin and it currently is about 3.5 feet. Dredging will cost $650,000. The concern over the fact that the tour boat occasionally goes out to keep the motors clean was cleared up to some satisfaction. It goes out only at extreme high tide for a 30 minute time span. At low tide it actually sits on the bottom.
Please contact me if you have any concerns, but don’t let these news stop you from fishing because it is better than ever. Once again, a Florida Bay ramp will be accesible Feb 4.
