Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Head to Flamingo this Spring, they're biting

Whitewater Bay’s wilderness fishing will get better as the winds blow in April. Wind will make fishing between islands and passes a good thing for those looking for action. When the winds lay down that’s the time to search for tarpon. Don’t forget that snook will feed heavily and big fish will strike your lures and flies. Bucktails jigs with swimming tails that bump the bottom are top drawer. Fish all points of islands and any extending structure along shorelines. Springtime will also find me off the backcountry coast in search of pelagics like cobia and tripletail.

Trout are plentiful, some drum and reds are also players this time of year. Snook are found in potholes along flats and bars. And there will be a greater showing of sharks. Great fun on light tackle.

The highlight (still)for me and client/friend Howard Stern was guiding him to a twenty eight-pound cobia on FLY. Then, watch him get a 15 pounder on FLY. The fight took 45 minutes on a ten-weight rod. It was a great accomplishment on fly fishing equipment. We were able to return with several clients and repeat similar experiences. Some tips here are to run off the coast and look for structure, traps, and bring quality chum. I often get on my poling tower and try to spot fish with binoculars. Just remember that April may be the last consistent month as cobia are a species that migrate and move on.
