Best Fishing of the Year for Snook, Tarpon, and Crevalles
The bite continues to be strong despite the heat. Fishing has been very good; we have had successful trips every time out with no skunking. We are still seeing an excellent snook bite with fish into double-digits boarded. Still around are some tarpon that are responding well to Yozuri plugs. Redfish are gatheing on outside creek mouths and runoffs along with plenty of snapper. One other bonus has been the large schools of big jack crevalles up to twenty pounds. Take a look at the photo of Guy from South Africa with a 16-pound specimen taken on a lure. That’s was an awesome fight on light tackle!
Snook will be the main target in Sept. due to the opening of the season. Be mindful that the size limits have had some minute adjustments. The new minimum is 27” however; pinching of the tail is allowed. And the max. is 33” just remember to know your regulations. Expect the snook fishing to be just as good as it has been throughout the summer. Catching your limit should not be very hard. Snook are my favorite because they are not so easy at time. I like the initial run they make into the roots-it’s a heart-pounding challenge. Many people also like the fact that they take lures so well and can be sight fished-the ultimate Glades experience. And lastly, they yield a generous amount of meat for the table.
Recall that the Flamingo area has had very little pressure because of its dredging project. Other than boats making long runs from the Keys, no one has really had access. Fishing is finally accessible and should get better through the fall. If you have never fished this area you ought to give yourself a shot. The fishing is top notch, plenty of action just minutes from the boat launch.
The Whitewater Bay ramp is an excellent launch point as are many other spots. The Florida Bay has already opened. Other alternatives that will beat the heat and crowd are to opt for evening trips. I tend to use the Hydroglow, a specialty night light tool, for this job. It has the force of attraction and really works like a charm. It’s just up to you to be tough enough to handle the bugs and creepy dark night. The snook will await your cast. Don’t be discouraged because if snook don’t cooperate or measure up there are so many other fish in the area.
