Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
February 14, 2007
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Still Going Strong at Flamingo

The backcountry continues to be a place for adventure and great fishing. We have had super days on the water this winter thus far. Flamingo, inside and out, has been awesome for that mixed bag action. We are seeing so many different species that it has been difficult to just focus on one species. Catches include trout, snook, redfish, mackerel, pompano, bluefish, grouper, permit, and bass.

Tarpon fishing has been fair during the day however; nighttime action has been good. But with those warm, sunny days coming late winter-they will be biting. Try spots that are not heavily fished for better results. Those out-of-the-way areas are going to produce better strikes. This may mean smaller fish but they are still tarpon. Big tarpon are usually in big water like large open bays and lakes, even offshore. Our biggest fish this past season was taken off a river mouth well south of Pavillion Key close to the Gulf’s edge. It weighed at an estimated 110 pounds and nearly one-hour fight time on light tackle. The funnest caught have been those teeny ten five pounders on the canoe trips.

The thing to do is to be prepared for a mixed bag, because that’s what we are getting right now. Fronts are still coming through and any fish is possible. Meanwhile I’ll be dreaming of a summer of snook like we had last year. If that repeats itself, oh boy. Sore arms and fingers-here we come again! Recently, those snook have been engulfing shrimp, real ones and plastic imitations.
