Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

SUMMERBITE....STILL GOING STRONG

Summer fishing continues with a great bite on most inshore species. In the Flamingo area we have been getting snook, snapper, tarpon, redfish, and tripletail using lures like weedless jerkbaits and Gulp shrimp. Natural bait shrimp run small this time of year so opting for the fakes makes a lot of sense (and scent). We are fishing open flats and drop offs with good results, mostly during early morning. When the sun climbs we tend to specifically target the redfish, which can be hot one day and off the other. Most of the seatrout have seems to have taken off to the deeper Gulf waters.

The fish arent’ the only things biting down here. Seems like the mosquitos are the sure bite! Wear long pants and sleeves for your trips. Once you get out of the marinas they usually disappear. Don’t be discouraged just go and you’ll enjoy good fishing. Remember to make quick releases because sharks are very active this time of year.

This is a great time of the year to perform regular maintenance on your engines and boats. Keep your hull in top shape by washing and waxing regularly. Also a quality rubbing compound, about once or twice a season is great for restoring your hull. This will remove small scratches and give it a bit of shine that oxidation has taken away. Keep your boats covered to prevent water and debris from clogging limberholes and bilge areas. Incpection of spark plugs is a great idea too. When in doubt change them-this should improve fuel economy and get you quicker starts.

A special thank you goes to Ed Burger, Rey Lopez, Geoff Pouling, and many other readers who helped me with my “swing-away trailer tongue” how-to story. I just wanted to say how grateful I was in receiving your calls and getting help with the photos. Thanks again folks!

FLYS FOR SALE: I am tying fishing flies for redfish, snook, and tarpon. If you are interested, please email or call. These are custom handtied flies and epoxy coated for long-lasting durability. They catch fish…time and time again. These will make a great gift or lure in your tackle box.

TAKE A KID FISHING SPECIAL: Please see my online pages.

Buying a boat? The days I don’t fish I am often surveying boats or writing about fishing or boating. If you are looking into a boat, let's talk. Remember anytime you can go fishing is a good time.
