Flamingo - Everglades National Park

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Here Come the Winter Fish

Fall fishing was a bit affected by some poor weather but on the good days, fishing was really good. For some reason, this season has had fewer boats and anglers on the waters I fish so we have had plenty of room and bent rods.

The Flamingo area in particular has had a good bite. All that rain we had is starting to dry out leaving us with fresh, cool days. Look for great action on snook and redfish. This is the best time of the year for it. I will admit to not spending as much time at Flamingo this year as in the past. It’s because the boys and I have been hunting for deer and fall turkey. Now, it’s time for the full Flamingo bite because it’s going to get real good.

This is the classic time to take out the Cajun thunder or old popping corks and put a shrimp under it. Pop and watch! You did bring the kids, right? Now work a “Johnny rattler beside it and you can’t miss! This is a great technique for snook and reds in the early morning. I will also rig tandem jigs on 1/8” jigheads with soft plastics. We can now get two fish at a time. Expect to release several fish because you will have enough for the grill.

Biscayne Bay has had good amounts of permit during this past fall season. I am seeing some giant barracuda on the bonefish flats too. And we have actually caught some real nice, keeper mutton snapper. Keith Overlander and son did that. Surpassingly, I have found that this area is productive at the right times.

My sons and I have been tying some fishing flies. If you know somebody that wants some effective backcountry flies, please contact us. These make GREAT GIFTS too. And you won’t break your bank. We donated 15 flies to the Casting For Cats tournament this past October. We would like to sell a few now

BOAT CHECK: Check those bilge pumps and float switches soon. Vessels with high water alarms, you have to make sure they work before the winter season gets underway. Rough seas can build up quickly and you need to make sure the bailers can do their job. Clean out boat bilge of debris with a shop-vac because this can cause pumps to fail. I have found small sand particles jam up my aerator pumps. Know how to take them off and on.
