IT'S WINTER AND THEY'RE BITING
Winter fishing in the Everglades is at its peak right now. The drum, trout, grouper have invaded the creeks and coastal shorelines. Just outside park boundaries are also som nice-sized mackerel, cobia, pompano and tripletail. Weather has been very mild, with the exeption of one cold front that killed a good number of fish. We found more than 30 dead goliath grouper and about a dozen snook floating. These fish were in shallow water when this happened and that freeze shock just killed them. This is one other reason the state should consider some alternative to harvest vulnerable groupers
Flats fishing will heat up a few days past any cold front, it usually takes three days if it has been especially cold. During a cold front always go to the nearest deep water like grass beds or canals. And don't disregard heading inland into freshwater creeks. These areas can be very good. Work your baits nice and slow. Take it easy! Fish can be lethargic in cold cater. Add some fishbites or Gulp to the hooks-the scent can help.
Best bets will be Whitewater Bay, Florida Bay near Sandy Key, and Snake Bight.
Boat Safety tip: WEAR your PFD. The weather can turn nasty in the middle of a nice winter day due to shifting winds. This can make for a rough ride back to the dock. You don’t want to be caught without a PFD. I have heard people tell me they wish they wore one after having lost someone or been in a terrible boating tragedy like a capsize. Try a SOSpender type jacket, they are very comfy and it could save your life.
