Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the night fishing for baby tarpon has been great! On Tuesday night we jumped 9 or 10 small tarpon in four hours, releasing 4 at the boat. We found fish at every spot we checked and all were in an eating mood until the tide slowed at the end of the evening. There's just enough shrimp on the tide to keep the fish looking for food and the night fishing should stay hot until the first mullet schools put in an appearance in a few weeks.

Although most of our fish were taken with bait we broke out the fly rod for an angler from Colorado who had only caught trout on #4 and 5 rods in small streams before that night. He came through with flying colors taking the largest fish of the night, about 30 lbs. on a Night Fly tied on a circle hook (I've been experimenting with a few night flies on circle hooks - they work great!).

During the night we never saw more than one or two other boats fishing the areas we covered. I guess everyone's fishing the ocean reefs for that summer snapper bite...
