Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Last week at Flamingo the superb fall fishing continued along the Gulf coast and nearby rivers. By Sunday the bait was starting to work well up into Oyster Bay and Cormorant Pass with lots of spanish mackeral and speckled trout feeding on them.
The best day last week was Friday with local angler Elman Myers and a visitor from London, Steve Camm, aboard. Elman managed a slam along the coast, with snook, redfish, and trout on both lures and bait. Steve Camm had one of those days that don't happen very often. He had a grand slam, adding a 60lb tarpon to the snook, reds, and trout. Then to top it off, he caught and released a 20" gag grouper at the mouth of a river.... This time of year we're doing that backcountry slam almost every day. Making it a grand slam only requires a bit of extra luck with a hungry tarpon.
As it has been for a few weeks now, the key is finding the bait along the coast and also up nearby rivers. The fish are feeding heavily on small herring, sardines, and pilchards in preparation to moving inside as the water cools. Now that schools of mullet have showed up in quantity a good number of tarpon from small to over 100lbs have also joined the party.
The one thing that has held the bait outside has been the heavy rains of recent weeks. As we move into the dry season at the end of this month the bait should gradually move inside and Whitewater Bay should really begin to shine. I'm looking forward to it. This is my favorite time in the backcountry. Every day the weather gets better along with the fishing. Except for the weekends you rarely see another boat all day. In the morning the 'gators and crocs at the boat ramp don't bother to notice a lone boat being launched. Now all I need are a few more anglers...
