Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water temps dropped considerably last week in the areas that we fish with morning surface temps as low as 63 degrees. Fortunately the fishing hasn't cooled off much at all....

The bait situation along the Gulf coast hasn't changed much, still lots of bait along the shorelines every day. What has changed a bit is that there haven't been the numbers of fish working them that I've come to expect the past few months. The areas that we fished seem to be in a transition mode with the fish moving back inside in preparation for the winter. Although the usual targets have been scarce on the outside, spanish macks and bluefish have moved in just offshore from about two miles out to the boundary markers. The mackeral have been from 2 to 6 lbs and very hungry. Cobia have also made a showing, we caught a small slot-sized one on Sunday and lost a large one at the same spot.

Every afternoon we've come inside and found reds and snook in both Oyster and Whitewater Bays along with schools of very nice sized ladyfish. All in all it's been a mixed bag every day through Monday. We even caught and released some nice sized flounder both outside and in Whitewater. As the water clears a bit inside I'm looking forward to some classic inside shoreline action on surface plugs and floating flies in the next few weeks.

Every day now there are the usual crocs and gators sunning themselves at the boat ramp. In the middle of the week when there aren't many anglers some will even yawn and pose for photos. They seem to know that the winter season is here already...
