Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The past two weeks at Flamingo have been great!
The giant tarpon have moved into the interior bays and are eating every morning. The best fish so far was a 100 lb. fish that ate a plug fished on 12# line. My angler, Jaime Rivera, of Mexico City, hooked the fish on his second cast of the morning. The fish was released at boat-side about an hour later. Right now they're eating plugs and flies equally well and will be in residence until the end of February.
Along the Gulf coast the baitfish are still the key to the best action. On the rare day that the baitfish are scarce the action slows a bit but is still quite good. Along with the usual snook, reds, and trout we've been finding some nice sized grouper. The grouper are still just under 24", though, and get released... On one morning last week we found a concentration of speckled trout near schools of bait. We caught and released them up to almost 26" for about an hour before moving away. It can be a fish every cast when you find them stacked up at a creek mouth.
Yesterday we fished bonefish out of Key Biscayne. Water conditions were excellent as the approaching cold front stalled. Most of the fish were ocean-side. Our best was 8 lbs. on 6# line for my angler's first bonefish. We also found numbers of permit at the top of the tide. They were elusive as always. We ended the day on tailing bones that were very large and staying just out of reach...
Until we get a solid cold front the bonefishing should remain steady.
