Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

We only had one outing at Flamingo these past few days and it was slow at first. The giant tarpon that are in the interior bays are still there but a quickly changing weather situation have made them tough to target. We did find a few floating near the surface, but usually by spooking them. When the wind settles down a bit they should really turn on again. During the afternoon we finally found hot action at one of several river mouths that we tried. Both of my anglers got backcountry slams of snook, reds, and trout. They were accompanied by jacks up to about 10 lbs that ate whatever came their way. For the present there is still plenty of bait along the Gulf coast and the actively feeding predators are nearby. With today's cold front I'm expecting more fish to leave the coast and head inside.
Biscayne Bay has finally turned on at night with small tarpon up to about 40lbs showing up at all the usual bridge spots. As usual they'll eat shrimp, lures, and flies (particularly small white flies, like the Night Fly). On Sunday night with a very short tide opportunity it was both tarpon and small snook at the spots we tried. The highlight of the evening was a tarpon that got so carried away trying to jump free that it crashed into one of the bridge fenders about four feet above the waterline... to prove it wasn't injured the fish promptly sounded and broke the line with a quick dash back toward the bottom of the pilings. The night fishing should be quite good the rest of the week and will continue into the following week for anyone who wants to ring in the new year with a very late night tarpon...
