Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The past few days have seen heavy action at Flamingo. I'm speaking about the number of anglers... Parking lots filled to overflowing with the combination of the holiday and great weather. Now for the fishing stuff...

Water temps have been unseasonably warm with 72 to 76 degrees during the day. The water clarity in Whitewater and Oyster Bays has been a bit murky for this time of year. Large tarpon are still in evidence in Whitewater each day but are not showing much at the surface except when feeding or being run over by one of the folks fishing for them.... In a day or two tarpon fishing should improve when the number of boats drops off and the fish are not disturbed so much. White bait is still in abundance along the Gulf coast. One or two throws fills a well with pilchards and menhaden. The Gulf side, though, is quite murky so we bring our bait back inside.

The best action this past week has been redfish found all the way up in fresh water at the head of rivers. We caught and released about a dozen that were all slot sized fish on Monday. They were eating lures and not shy about it. A brown and orange Clouser should do the trick for fly rodders. We also found fair numbers of trout holding along the corners of islands in Whitewater and Cormorant Pass. All of our snook were on live bait around structure with small menhaden the first choice.
