Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Capt. Bob LeMay

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flamingo (inside and Gulf coast)

Last week at Flamingo was a bit slow for the two days we fished it. On one day we managed to get backcountry slams for both anglers with fish on the small side. The next day it was lots of sharks with lemons, bulls, and a few that were just plain hungry and hard to identify.... The highlight of the day was the number of very nice sized spanish mackeral along the gulf coast striking quite close to shore. Most were less than a quarter mile off the beach in less than 8' of water. No need to chum for them either just look for the sky rockets that look like small tarpon from a distance.

Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay was the best part of the week. On Saturday night Dr. Nate Mayl of Ft. Lauderdale made an outstanding catch and release. He sighted, hooked and fought a tarpon of about 80lbs on a light fly rod (a # 9 Sage rod). For more than an hour we chased and fought the fish before releasing it. The fly was a Night fly on a 1/0 hook. Although the usual night-time tarpon around bridges are in the 20 to 40lb range during winter, that night most of the fish at one bridge were at least 50 and one was clearly over a hundred. All were gorging on shrimp within about 20 feet of the boat.

Yesterday it was large jack crevalle in the northern portion of Biscayne. Murray Verlin caught three and all were 15 to 16lbs. The fish were terrorizing schools of baitfish along the edge of a flat and could be seen from quite a distance.
