Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This time of year Flamingo is the place to be and that's where I've been day after day. Every day for the past few weeks we've had tarpon biting and most of the time staying attached to our lures, flies, and anything else we've thrown at them. This report will only cover the last week, though.
On Monday Matt Somma of Virginia jumped tarpon up to 100lbs on lures and spinning tackle. The fish did all the releasing that day. The next day Joseph Ciampa jumped four and released one at the boat along with two bull sharks and some nice trout.
Wednesday was the best catch of the week. Nick Farago, age 11, got his first tarpon fishing with his dad and older brother. The fish was released at boat side after we estimated it at well over 80lbs on 15# spinning tackle. An outstanding catch! His dad, Alan Farago, a prominent local environmental activist, caught and released one on a fly that was just a bit smaller at 80lbs. That fish was caught in a river less than 80 feet in width....
We ended the week with a backcountry slam for A. J. Alioto and his dad Frank. For AJ’s 17th birthday he caught snook up to 9lbs, a slot size redfish, and another nice tarpon of about 80lbs. His dad caught a red of almost 10lbs. We didn't get a lot of shots that day but AJ and his dad really took advantage of every shot they had.
Although we did some great fishing this past week, the conditions were far from ideal with the barometer jumping around and very little bait in evidence. If the weather will hold a steady pattern for a few days it should really turn on. For anyone with the itch, try to fish during the week instead of the weekend if possible. It really makes a difference.
