Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This time of year most guides hardly have a day off and it's been busy. We'll start off with Flamingo.

The rivers and river mouths continue to hold large tarpon. This past week the big fish have been doing all of the releasing, however. I particularly enjoy watching a young angler with his (or her) first large tarpon. Even when the encounter is only one or two jumps it's quite an experience. Large schools of trout are starting to show up a mile or two off of the beaches. When you find one of them the action is non-stop with every cast a fish. Markers nearby are holding good sized jewfish and the occasional cobia. Moving a 100lb+ jewfish (goliath grouper...) away from a marker with rod and reel isn't impossible but it won't happen without pulling as hard as possible for a while.

In Biscayne Bay the night fishing is going strong. We fished the bridges and lights the past two nights and found lots of small tarpon (and a few not so small, from 40 to almost 60lbs). Enough shrimp are moving at night to keep them snapping, along with nearby ocean-sized ladyfish. At Flamingo or here in Biscayne Bay this is a peak time. There are so many opportunities that none of the areas that we've fished seem to have a lot of anglers. Wish it was that way all year long...
