Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Although we only fished one day at Flamingo this past week it was a memorable outing. Elman Myers, a local businessman, caught and released a backcountry slam. Steve Camm, from England, caught and released a 12' sawfish on spinning tackle. We estimated it to be almost 300lbs and a perfect specimen. Just to let us know it wasn't tired the fish whacked the rubrail with its bill several times as we were trying to release it.... A few minutes later after setting out our rigs again we had a triple hook-up with sharks from 50 to 100lbs and only two anglers to handle the rods. Things got very interesting for a while since one of the sharks was on 10# line and almost spooled Elman several times during the 20 minute fight. At the end of the day both anglers were tired but happy.
As of last week the anticipated mosquitoes still had not appeared. With the recent rains that shouldn't last. I've noticed a lot less anglers this May in the areas that I normally fish. I suppose that the early closing of snook season has had a lot to do with it. Although you've got to release them the snook fishing will get better and better along the Gulf coast all summer long.
