Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week there's been lots of variety along the Gulf coast and not very may mosquitoes. On Saturday it was snook, trout, and a variety of other species including pompano. The best catch of the week was a 16lb snook in Whitewater Bay taken on a jig by local angler, Bill Marks. It was an outstanding catch on 10# spinning tackle. Other anglers fishing the area reported spanish mackerel and small bluefish when the weather allowed them to fish the outside.
Yesterday, Judy and Mel Axelrod from Sarasota were on board and racked up snook, jewfish, gag grouper, speckled trout, a small cobia, three different kinds of shark along with the usual ladyfish, snapper, and jacks. All were caught and released carefully. Summer fishing along the Gulf side is like that. Although we had planned on fishing Florida Bay the weather closed us out early and we ran north to stay dry. The coast has clouds of immature herring and bay anchovies on the incoming tide and we watched predators around creek mouths taking advantage of the available food.
Although the bulk of the tarpon have left the area for the spawning migration there are still enough fish to target. The next few days we'll be after them.
