Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the summer variety show along the west coast of the Everglades was in full display. We fished along shorelines and river mouths and rarely saw another boat. Three of my anglers got backcountry slams with snook, redfish, trout, and the occasional tarpon. Along the way we caught and released spanish mackeral, small grouper, sheepshead, and up to four different species of shark each day. The highlight of the week was young Luis Cortes, age 15, fishing with his father. He caught and released a grand slam on light spinning gear. One of his fish, a 30lb tarpon, was taken on 8# line which is pretty light gear for a fish that size.
We're finding lots of small white bait along shorelines when the water is clear. Although we haven't targeted them, we're catching an occasional mackeral every day which indicates that you could probably chum them up in deeper water. Once we've cleared the boat ramp each day we've never been bothered by mosquitoes as long as we stay away from the bushes.... The next few months should see the fishing get better and better along the Gulf coast north and south of the Shark River area from Cape Sable to Lostman's River. It's safe to say that about all of the Ten Thousands area as well, but that's another story.
