Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing north and south of the Shark River area continues to be very good. Every day that we've fished there it's been tarpon, snook, redfish, and trout. Lots of white bait along the shorelines have been easy to obtain. One throw of the net and your livewell is filled. We're either using bait with light rods or live chumming with it to draw fish, then fly fish for them.
This time of year there are always surprises for anglers. A bait intended for one kind of fish often attracts another. While working a bait in rolling tarpon we hooked a jewfish estimated at 50lbs. Right behind him, a large bull shark came right up to the boat before abandoning his meal at the last possible moment. When we released the jewfish I'm betting that he went to the nearest hole in the river bottom and stayed put for a while!
Although there are lots of mosquitoes at the boat ramp each day, once you leave the ramp and stay away from the shoreline a bit the bugs aren't a problem. Water temperatures this time of year are generally high, with 82 or 83 degrees showing at dawn in some areas. The mornings after lots of rain at night offer the coolest water temps. We found 77 and 78 degree water on Sunday morning with active fish wherever we went. This weekend should be quite good if the current weather pattern holds.
