Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This will be my first report in the last two weeks. It's been busy and we were chasing those late season tarpon right up until last week's cold front. The bad news is that the water temps dropped almost 7 degrees in just two days and the big fish disappeared. The good news is that, as of today, the water temps have come back enough that we're finding them again at river mouths. This afternoon we put one in the boat that we estimated at 80lbs.. There are also some very nice snook showing up, both along the coast and in inside bays. We've taken them up to 10lbs on tipped jigs and one of 18lbs this morning on bait. The big snook was almost eaten by a shark while he was jumping trying to shake the hook. He (probably a she) was carefully weighed, photographed and released.
There are lots of spanish mackeral showing up just offshore of the coast. I talked with one angler that had fish up to and over 5lbs to bring home for dinner. He advised that there was also lots of bait offshore which is probably why the macks are around.
The next few weeks should see a bit cooler water and lots of hot action along the Gulf coast and in the nearby bays just inside the rivers that drain into the western boundaries of the 'Glades. I'm looking forward to it.
