Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week was one of great contrasts. The extremely high and low tides made for some interesting fishing. On the low end of the tides, we found good numbers of redfish, both inside and along the coast near river mouths. They were perfect targets for fly fishers. On the high rising tide fish were feeding heavily on the bait being pushed into the rivers. The big tarpon are still around with our extended warm spell. We broke one off of about 70lbs on a fly the only time we tried. A few miles offshore we found spanish mackeral up to about 5lbs mixed in with bluefish up to about 3lbs without using any chum at all. It should be hot for anglers fishing for them seriously...
The best fishing we found was outside of rivers where great quantities of bait was holding in channels near the bottom of the tide. One throw of the net produced pilchards, sardines, large bay anchovies, and small menhaden. Our best snook that day was about 33". This is the time of year where it's difficult to decide what to do with lots of opportunities for everything from bait fishing to fly fishing. Water temps remain relatively high and with little wind, every day the water gets clearer. Perfect conditions!
