Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the action has been mostly along the coast north and south of the Shark River area. We've found great quantities of new summer pilchards at every river mouth. It will be at least another month before they're big enough to net (most are less than 1.5" right now) but lots of fish are working them. At one corner my anglers caught fish for two hours on every cast, with lots of double hook-ups on 16 to 19" speckled trout, spanish mackeral up to about 4lbs, and other incidentals like jacks and and small gag grouper. None of these fish were working the small bait which leads me to believe that they were holding deep working shrimp in the channel near the bottom.
There are still some tarpon in a few of the river mouths now, mostly on the small side. Fred Lindeman caught and released on of about 25lbs. Nearby we had a goliath grouper (jewfish) in the 30 to 40lb range chase a jig back to the boat and eat it 3 times before Fred hooked him. Of course the fight only lasted until the fish could get back to the tree he came from.... It was quite a show while it lasted.
With the heavy rain of the past few days the remainder of big snook and trout on the inside should be making their way back outside to find the salinity they need. With a few exceptions we'll be concentrating on the Gulf coast for now.
