Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well it's still hot and muggy, the mosquitoes are still trying to outbite the fish, and the fishing is still darned good...
This week the accent is on big tarpon. Jaime Rivero of Mexico released one of about 100lbs on Monday. We're getting good shots at them every day. Along with big tarpon it's been speckled trout, redfish, snook, and a variety of other species along the coast. We've also been catching some very nice sized mangrove snappers in the same areas that snook frequent. These are much larger than mangroves get the rest of the year. Both East Cape and Middle Cape canals are great on a falling tide. The heavily wooded shorelines north and south of the Shark River are the place to be on a rising tide. You've got to pay close attention, though, when even a small snook comes out from under a blown down tree and strikes. They can be back under that same tree before you can react to the strike...
We're finally starting to see a few other boats along the coast, but most of the time we're on our own. This time of year the mornings have fair weather and the afternoons bear watching, closely. As a result of the passing storm (eventual hurricane) that hit Texas, even the afternoons lately have been thunderstorm free. That situation won't last much longer. This is also the time of year to bring extra water and other drinks for a day on the water. You'll be happy that you did.
