Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week we've begun moving into a late summer pattern along the Gulf coast out of Flamingo. We're seeing more and more bait each day and lots of tarpon. This week the tarpon have done all the releasing, most without much effort at all... Yesterday we were in fish from about 50 to 100lbs that were so relaxed that you could see them finning out and just drifting up to us. None would look at the lures or flies that my anglers were tossing at them. Pretty frustrating. Nearby ladyfish, jacks, small snook, and the occasional spanish mackeral were shredding small whitebaits. Small flies or jigs worked along the shoreline were attacked on every cast. Of course the tarpon were only a cast or two off that same shoreline... Two days before those same fish ate everything they came upon, then promptly shook the hook on the first or second jump. That's tarpon!

This is the time of year to fish as early as possible each day. After a night charter for tarpon and snook tonight I'll be back at Flamingo the rest of the week. I'll wager those bored tarpon will respond quickly to a live ladyfish...
