Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

My first charter this past week was at night in Biscayne Bay. We only jumped three of the baby tarpon but had shots at quite a few more. As usual the fly to use was a 1/0 Night Fly, a simple white tarpon pattern. The fish are beginning to shift to feeding on glass minnows and should hold that pattern until the first mullet runs in about six weeks.
At Flamingo there were lots of different opportunities. We found nice sized snook at East Cape canal striking live bait for catch and release. Some of the fish this time of year are upwards of 20lbs.... As usual for late summer very few anglers are fishing the areas we favored. Along the Gulf coast it was slam time. The best action was on Sunday. My anglers caught and released snook, trout, redfish, tarpon and a varitety of other species. T. J. Mincer, a local angler, got his first backcountry grand slam. He caught and released all four - trout, redfish, tarpon, and snook. All were on light spinning gear using 1/4 ounce bucktails. It's that time of year when a grand slam is a real possibilty on any day...
