Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week the baitfish along the Gulf coast out of Flamingo have been easy to find along wild beach shorelines. The hard part has been throwing your net without landing on the usual submerged logs and branches. Snook, speckled trout, and redfish have been feeding heavily under most of the bait concentrations that we found. Whether you're using live bait or lures the action has been steady.
The best action this past week has been with tarpon up to and over 100 lbs. A lady angler fought one for almost an hour along the coast that we estimated at over 100 lbs on 15# spinning gear before bringing it to boatside for release. The next day, Dr. Nate Mayl, of Ft. Lauderdale, hooked another big fish in a nearby river. Any 100 lb tarpon is a handful. This fish was in a narrow river and was taken on a fly rod. For almost an hour we chased that fish up and down the river, before boating it for a quick photo, then carefully releasing it to fight another day. During most of the fight maximum pressure was needed to keep the fish out from under trees and other obstacles. A 100 lb tarpon in a river less than 100 feet wide is the catch of a lifetime. It was taken on a Tarpon Snake pattern fished deep on a river bend.
Whether it's snook, trout, and reds you're after or the giant tarpon, the Gulf side of the 'Glades from Cape Sable north to Lostman's River will get better and better from now until October. Except for the weekends we're rarely ever seeing another boat.
