Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week has been a time of transition with strong westerly winds muddying up coastal waters. The baitfish have pretty much disappeared in the areas that we fish and it's been difficult to sight fish along Gulf shores. Fortunately the inside areas, Oyster and Whitewater Bays have started to produce snook, reds, and trout on a regular basis. Water temps have remained relatively high with morning lows at around 69 degrees despite a few cold nights. I guess that the afternoon sun has warmed up the water enough that it can hold some of that heat overnight...
On our best day last week we managed to catch quite a variety of fish although we had to cover some ground to find them. Jaime Rivero of Mexico City caught and released a backcountry slam with snook, trout, and redfish. Along the way he also caught and released spanish mackeral, bluefish, a jewfish of about 40lbs, a small sawfish, and a few bull sharks. The only thing missing was a tarpon, but they'll return soon enough.
Now that more and more folks are returning to Flamingo for that inside backcountry fishing, the boat ramp and some of the better known spots are getting a little crowded. A little courtesy goes a long way. It only takes a moment to idle down when you have to pass near someone fishing the shallows. Fortunately most anglers go out of their way to be courteous. The few who don't, should learn how.....
