Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week we found good fishing both inside and outside at Flamingo. Ranging from Rankin Bight all the way to Cape Sable I combined with Capt Jorge Valverde on a double boat charter last Friday. During the day we found redfish, sheepshead, speckled trout, pompano, and bluefish. Two days later it was back inside Whitewater Bay where my anglers scored nicely on good sized trout hitting topwater lures. The large numbers of winter ladyfish made working topwater lures great fun. It was a fish on every cast unless you just let the lure sit a bit. Big trout find it tough to resist a small plug that is just sitting motionless at the surface. If you were careful not to strike at the first hit they would keep attacking until they were hooked. Conditions continue to improve for big tarpon in Whitewater Bay. Although we didn't find any on Sunday they should have made an appearance by mid-week with the warm weather we've been having.

I noticed a surge in the number of anglers on Sunday with the start of snook season. The current warming trend should greatly improve prospects for those dedicated snook hunters. This is the time of year when big snook will be found all the way up into the freshwater portions of interior bays like Hell's Bay, Tarpon Bay, and Broad River Bays. I don't expect them to be hitting plugs much until the water temperatures rise above 68 degrees and stay there for a few days. A live bait or a tipped jig will get their attention if properly presented. For fly fishers remember the forage will still be on the small side unless you can see finger mullet being worked by active fish. Small snook are easily fooled now, the bigger fish are tough to feed. The larger fish will be even tougher if hooked near structure....
